Pierson Place Historic District

By: Pam Perry, Editor Pierson Place Times

Pierson Place is historically important to Phoenix for the diversity in housing represented by 16 architectural styles.  The neighborhood retains examples not only of the architecture, but of building materials and construction practices used from the 1920's thru the 1950's.  We have 7 adobe buildings within our historic district.  We are a mix of owner occupied homes, and properties offered as rentals; including single family homes on residential lots, small duplexes or quads. Later infill construction provided multifamily housing for rent or sale. Many of our original residents no longer live here; however, some of my neighbors grew up here and live in the family home still.  Some of us have been around for decades; others are newly come to Phoenix and Pierson Place.  We have kids, dogs, roommates, and hail from all over the world!  The location offers great access to the city center, and we do not have to venture far for recreation or entertainment.  Schools, museums, cultural activities, First Fridays, and of course, light rail, are on our doorstep!  Shopping and errands can begin and end less than a mile from my home in Pierson Place; a bike or a walk will get me to restaurants, groceries, coffee shops, boutiques, exercise programs, critter care, spas and beautifying, or just poking around looking for treasures among the many shops along 7th Avenue!  Often when I am asked where I got some article or another I can smile and say "I shop the 'Avenue." We are not the largest historic district, not the oldest, nor do we have the cachet of some, but we offer a great place to live near the resources of our large metropolitan area, we are safe and afffordable, and we know and meet our neighbors along 'the Avenue,' at the shops and stores close to home!

CAMELBACK & CENTRAL MULTI-USE PROJECT

Plans for the three twenty-two story buildings have recently been expanded. The developer is now working to gain approval of a maximum height of 400 feet. The project includes a combination of luxury hotels, high end condominiums, and 20,000 square feet of retail space.

• The City Streets Department has agreed to do a traffic study in our neighborhood next spring to document the new rash of speeding and cut-thru traffic. After that, we will be in good position to pursue resolutions to these problems.

• Safety features in the pedestrian walkway between the Light Rail Station and our neighborhood are being reviewed by Mariposa residents. Pedestrian access to (and from) the station has the potential for effecting the neighborhood negatively, but these residents are working hard to make sure that doesn't happen.

• FYI - The city has agreed to build an 8-foot block wall between the neighborhood and the Light Rail Station and the Camelback Park n' Ride lot. (from Central to 3rd Ave.)

• A giant new billboard is illuminating three or four back yards on Mariposa by 3rd Ave, and the City Development Services Department is working on ways to minimize this problem.

• The principals of the Omninet hi-rise condo project (south of the southeast corner of Central & Camelback) are planning more neighborhood presentations next spring. Stay tuned for this one!

• Irrigation: reminder, no water in January because of the canal clean-out program.

• More porch lights, deadbolt locks, and monogrammed t-shirts and caps are available for free! Contact us to get yours now!

• We formed a new committee to pursue an Historic designation on the National Historic Register, and JoAnn Muench is the Chair. A listing on the National Register allows property owners to apply for a reduction in their property taxes. Our part of this project is expected to be completed in 2008, and we hope the designation will be completed by 2009.

• Officer and Board elections are coming up at our next General Meeting in the last week of January, date to be announced.

• Our secretary position is vacant, and our upcoming elections is the perfect time to volunteer for this position. It's super easy, takes very little time, and it's a good way to get involved in YOUR neighborhood.

• We plan to install new permanent message boards along 3rd Ave this spring, look for them and all the valuable information they will contain!

• There are two more digital cameras available for residents to take pictures of graffiti, code violations, and potential crimes in the neighborhood. Forwarding these pictures to the Police and City Departments is super easy, and it gets fast results for our neighborhood. Let us know if you want to use one!

• We plan to install permanent monument markers on the major entrances of the neighborhood. These are made of brick/block and measure roughly 3' x 3' x 5' tall. Land for these at 3rd & Camelback and Central & Highland has been donated, and we are still looking for a site at 7th & Highland.

• What goals and objectives should we pursue in 2009? Start thinking about what we should do in the new year, and bring us your input at our next General Meeting in January!
